Alternators

There are several types of brushless alternators. The best choice depends on the required output power, nature of the driving force, and weight/space limitations.

All Sullivan alternators use rare earth magnets for high power density. They have no brushes or slip rings to wear, and they have few or no moving parts, so they have very low noise and excellent reliability.

All of these alternators produce single or multiphase AC voltage. Mated to a voltage regulator, they can deliver a variety of DC voltages.

Alternator Type
Description
Face type Alternators

Power: 5W to 15W
Cost per watt: highest
Grams per watt: highest
Moving parts: none
Engine range: 4cc to 50cc
Ideal for small engines and low power
Coreless Alternators

Power: 20W and up
Cost per watt: medium
Grams per watt: high
Moving parts: sealed ball bearings if required
RPM range: 200 to 2000
Cogless design is ideal for wind or water power
Reverse Pancake Alternators

Power: 30W to 150W
Cost per watt: low
Grams per watt: low
Moving parts: a sealed ball bearing (or none)
Engine range: 25cc and up
A good choice for moderate power from larger engines, or power from non-engine shafts

Pancake Alternators

Power: 50W and up
Cost per watt: lowest
Grams per watt: lowest
Moving parts: a sealed ball bearing (or none)
Engine range: 25cc and up
The best choice for maximum power density or large output
